Design

The design stage is the second phase of the design process. In this stage, six drawings (design ideas) are created as feasible ideas for the final product. After this, each idea is evaluated against the design specifications created in the previous phase (investigation). Then, an interview takes place with the client and they choose the final and best design. Finally, you develop, then finalize your final drawing and do one final evaluation against the specifications.

Positives

There were many positives with my design phase, as it was one of my most successful, and Mr. Thorburn even said: “Troy, this is excellent work and the highest quality I have graded in any year group.” This was a huge honor, and I would like to identify the positives that made it so successful. First of all, the mood board created was very successful as I had many pictures that were all different angles of rotation. In the mood board, I wanted all of the pictures to be food-and-kitchen related because that is the theme of my clock for my client. During the design phase, I also creatively thought of six different designs. However, I would consider only four of which to be of high quality.  Another positive was my “Evaluation Against Specifications.” I evaluated all of my designs against the specifications conceptualized during the investigation stage. I also provided in-depth explanations into why it fulfilled or did not fulfill the specification. The last positive I can think of from my investigation phase was the final design and evaluation. This was probably one of the best parts of this stage as I provided in-depth analysis to the specification versus the final design. This stage was almost perfect, but nothing is without flaws.

Negatives

The only negative factor of this design phase was the fifth and sixth designs. They were basically the same design and the only real difference between the two was that one had stickers of fruits, while the other had stickers of desserts. On both clocks, these stickers represented the 3, 6, 9, and 12 of the clock. The designs were both of pretty low quality, and I wish they were improved.

Improvements

The only possible improvement I can think of to improve this phase of the MYP design cycle is to have been more creative in the process of creating designs five and six. The two designs should be less alike, and the designs should have a little more contrast in order for the viewer to differentiate the two.
